LOOK! MAYOR ESTRADA: MANDATORY DRUG TEST FOR MANILA BARANGAY OFFICIALS
According to GMA News Online, Sunday, October 10, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said the barangay officials, from chairmen to councilors, will undergo mandatory drug tests. “Yes, we will do that. From barangay chairmen down to the barangay kagawad, there will be no exemption,” Estrada said.
Mayor Estrada said that all who will came out positive will be removed and will be charged with criminal and administrative charges.
“It is a betrayal of public trust. People elected them. Do you think they are worthy of their positions if they’re drug addicts?” he said. He said that this plan for drug tests is following the incident happened in an anti-drugs operation in Quiapo, Manila where 7 suspects died including a Barangay Chairman named Faiz Macabato.
Police said Macabato was considered a high-value target and has a bounty of P1 million for his arrest. Citing Executive Order 292 or the Administrative Code of 1987, the city government said government employees who will test positive for drug use can be dismissed from the service.
Mayor Estrada, Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna and members of the city council subjected themselves to a drug test at the city hall last August 18. All of the officials came out clean.
