JUST IN: MAGDALO TO DUTERTE: DO YOU REALLY WANT INDEPENDENT FOREIGN POLICY OR YOU JUST LOVE CHINA?

Aside from any other critics of President Rodrigo Duterte on his independent foreign policy, Magdalo party-list is puzzled why the president is bidding to burn bridges in the country's diplomatic ties. Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano said that he is supporting Duterte on his independent foreign policy, however, he should not cut ties with alliances.

“The President should carefully consider the alliances that we have long established. An independent foreign policy could be pursued, while at the same time maintaining alliances that proved beneficial on our end. The two are not mutually exclusive,” Alejano said.

“I understand that he is adamant in pursuing independent foreign policy, but there is no need for tactless statements to prove his intention. Being the head of state, he is essentially the Chief Diplomat. His undiplomatic behavior left a bad taste and could jeopardize our relationships in the international sphere,” Alejano added. “What we are witnessing is a 180-degree turn from a multilateral, united front, and rule of law strategy against China to maintaining the status quo and opting for bilateral engagement. He is obviously pivoting towards China at the expense of severing ties with US and EU. This is anything but pursuing independent foreign policy.”

Alejano advised the President to clarify his statement to avoid confusion.

“The Duterte administration should clarify the direction of our foreign policy. Absence of such can cause confusion and have repercussions on our political, economic, and military situation,” Alejano said.

Alejano also said that the economy has suffer from Duterte’s undiplomatic behavior.

“It might be too soon to judge on where our economy is heading. However, it should be noted that the President, with his changing public statements and unclear policy direction, has created uncertainty and unpredictability which left investors’ confidence to spiral down,” Alejano said.
