GOOD NEWS! FINALLY: Iloilo-Guimaras Bridge To Be Built Soon!
In a radio interview in Iloilo City, Mayor Eugene Reyes of Buenavista, Guimaras who serves as the League of the Municipalities (LMP)-Guimaras Chapter president, confirmed that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) already gave the go signal for the construction of the Iloilo-Guimaras bridge.
No other details of the bridge were released for the press but DPWH secretary Mark Villar announced that the construction will start soon. Government officials are eyeing Leganes, Iloilo and Buenavista, Guimaras as connecting points.
Earlier reports said that the bridge is planned to be 2.6-kilometer long and is expected to make the travel of goods and services more convenient.
Guimaras governor Samuel Gumarin hoped that the construction will start as early as 2017 through the help of a public-private partnership (PPP) and the national government through the DPWH. The governor confirmed that the national government has allotted an initial budget of Php150M for the preparation and clearance of the project.
On the other hand, Iloilo governor Arthur Defensor Sr. also welcomed the idea and gave it his support::“it is beneficial to the growth, development and progress of the entire province and city of Iloilo.”
“It will boost the production not only in Iloilo, but also in Guimaras,” he added.
Local government officials are still waiting for the feasibility report of the project. Meanwhile, residents and visitors of Guimaras and Iloilo are still crossing the two regions through Guimaras strait via pump boats and roll-on, roll-off vessels.
