Embarrassing: 3 out if 10 Negros Grade 9 Students Hindi Nila Kilala Kung Sino Ang Vice Pres Ng Pinas
In Negros Occidental, the DepEd Schools Provincial Superintendent on Social Studies is on hot seat after examination results of more than 3,500 Grade 9 students all over the province declared “a failure”.
Dr. Leonila Pajes has a lot to explain to the DepEd regional director on why three out of ten senior students don’t know who the current Philippine vice president is.
After President Duterte has completed his cabinet more than two months ago, DepEd ordered their social studies (Araling Panlipunan) supervisors to let the senior students familiarize Duterte’s 21 cabinet members. DepEd has issued the list that was circulated around the country.
From September 12 to October 8, the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City (NOHS), Doña Motserrat Lopez Memorial High School (DMLMHS) in Silay City, and the Ramon Torres National High School (RTNHS) in Bago City, conducted an exam that includes Duterte’s cabinet. The three schools mentioned are among the biggest senior high schools in the province.
The test paper asked only 13 government positions including the president and the vice president, with 11 top cabinet positions.
The following cabinet positions included in the test papers are:
- Vice President
- Executive Secretary
- Education Secretary
- Agriculture Secretary
- Health Secretary
- National Defense Secretary
- Secretary of Justice
- DILG Secretary
- DOLE Secretary
- DPWH Secretary
- DTI Secretary
- DENR Secretary
The most notable mistake was in the Secretary of National Defense where 1,265 students put PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa’s name instead of Sec. Delfin Lorenzana. Education Secretary Leonor Briones got the highest answer following Duterte with only 27 students failed to answer.
For the vice president, only 69% (2,415) of the students got the correct answer. 985 of the students put Bongbong Marco’s name instead of VP Leni Robredo, while the rest put Grace Poe, and former Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago.
During an interview with Radyo Agong, Pajes said they did not include the name of the president and vice presidents in the list of cabinet distributed to schools before that’s why only students with personal knowledge through news knows who the vice president is.
Bombo Radyo Bacolod tried to get comments from several students who answered the VP question incorrectly and the following are some of their comments.
- I thought Marcos won because he was close to Duterte (2 answers)
- My father and mother always mention Bongbong Marcos at home (12 answers)
- I don’t know who Leni Robredo is so I answered Marcos. (8 answers)
- I don’t know (27 answers)
“I think our vice president really lacks popularity here, but of course it is our duty to educate our children”, Castro said.
Robredo got 969,381 votes while Marcos got 225,822 votes on the previous elections. It’s just hard to imagine how it happened.
Negros Occidental is among the lists of provinces where Marcos accused of Robredo for vote manipulation – case is pending on Supreme Court.
