MUST SHARE: Duterte advises DSWD not to hide the poor during Miss Universe 2017
The Philippines may be hosting a prestigious international beauty pageant next year, but President Rodrigo Duterte believes it’s no reason for the poor to be hidden from view.

Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo on Thursday said she has received instructions from Duterte not to hide the poor when the Miss Universe pageant is staged in the Philippines in January 2017. “Ang instruction ni Presidente, huwag sila itago,” Taguiwalo said in a text message.

The Cabinet official’s predecessor, former Social Welfare Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, drew flak for carting off the homeless to resorts outside Metro Manila during Pope Francis’ visit to the country in January 2015 and the hosting of the APEC Summit in November of the same year. Soliman described the out-of-town trips for the poor as part of an orientation to inform them of the government’s modified conditional cash transfer (CCT) program.

In a press conference in Malacañang, Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo assured that the homeless will be well taken care of by the DSWD for the entire duration of the Miss Universe pageant. “We will take care of them in a more humane way,” she said.

”(Social welfare) Secretary Judy (Taguiwalo) will take care of them, I assure you that. That’s all,” Teo added.
