JUST IN: De Lima loses chairmanship of justice committee to Dick Gordon
The Senate has ousted Senator Leila de Lima as chairperson of the committee on justice and human rights, replacing her with Senator Richard Gordon. Gordon was named as the new chairman of the panel during the plenary session Monday (Sept. 19) after 16 senators voted to declare all positions of the committee vacant.
Only four senators opposed the move to unseat De Lima while two abstained.
The motion to declare the justice committee vacant was made by Senator Manny Pacquiao after Senator Alan Peter Cayetano gave a privilege speech criticizing De Lima’s handling of the Senate probe on drug-related killings and accusing her of leading a demolition job against President Rodrigo Duterte.
With Gordon now the new committee chair, De Lima has been relegated to being a member of the panel she headed for barely over a month. Senator Panfilo Lacson, meanwhile, was named the committee’s vice chairperson.
