GOOD NEWS: US To Partner With Philippines Vs Narco-Traffickers
United States President Barack Obama assured the Philippines that US is willing to partner with the ally nation in ts quest against the illegal drug trade.
But the American President immediately clarified that the US is standing by its position that all the measures to be implemented and all steps to be taken must be in accordance to the rule of law and international norms in combating all sorts of problems that the nation is facing, including the campaign against the narco-traffickers.
In the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN-US leaders meeting, Obama said narco-trafficking is a big problem that the Philippines is facing, along with America and other parts of the world.
But for the president of the superpower nation, while they partner with the Philippines, it is important to eliminate the problem through just ways, regardless of how gross and bad the enemy is. Obama believes that if things are done the wrong way, innocent lives will be at cost.
Obama said in his ASEAN-US leaders meeting: “As despicable as these networks may be and as much damage as they do, it is important from our perspective to make sure that we do it the right way. Because the consequences of when you do it the wrong way are innocent people get hurt and you have a bunch of unintended consequences that don’t solve the problem”.
Obama’s statement came after the international community’s negative remarks on the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines because of the government’s strengthened campaign against illegal drugs.
This is one reason that President Rodrigo Duterte was enraged before he left for Laos that resulted to his insulting words towards Obama and in effect, the American president cancelled their supposed-to-be first ever formal, bilateral meeting, in the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit. [source]
