More relatives of slain Special Action Force (SAF) commandos have lodged complaints againt former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino and former top officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) over their accountability in the January 2015 Mamasapano massacre.
Accompanied by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), the complainants sought before the Office of the Ombudsman Aquino’s indictment on charges of reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide for the incident wherein 44 SAF members were killed.
Relatives also want charged along with Aquino former Police Director General Alan Purisima and former SAF commander Director Getuilo Napenas. Those who filed the complaint were Telly Sumbilla, mother of PO3 John Lloyd Sumbilla; Helen Ramacula, mother of PO2 Rodel Ramacula; and Lorna Sagonoy, mother of PO1 Joseph Sagonoy.
The slain SAF members were part of an operation called Oplan Exodus conducted last January 25, 2015 in Mamasapano, Maguindanao. Its aim was to neutralize Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan and his protégé, Filipino bomb-maker Abdul Basit Usman. Although the operation resulted in the death Marwan, 44 of the elite cops died during an ensuing gun battle against members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
The group’s counsel, lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, reiterated that Aquino should be held accountable for the blunder in the operation, which was still handled by Purisima even though he was suspended at that time.
