De Lima admits closeness to driver
Senator Leila de Lima has finally broken her silence about her driver, Ronnie Dayan, as the controversy surrounding her alleged involvement in illegal drug rages.
In a press conference Saturday (August 20), De Lima confirmed that she and Dayan are close although she declined to give more details. “Napalapit siya (Dayan) sya sa akin pero kung gaano kalapit sa akin, ipagpaumanhin ninyo, I don’t want to touch it muna kasi pesonal na bagay na yan…,” she said.
De Lima said Dayan has been her driver and bodyguard from the time she was still in private practice as a lawyer up until she became Justice Secretary under the Aquino administration.
She said Dayan worked for her until early 2015. But although he is no longer with her, the senator said she and her former driver are still in touch.
“Wala na po siya sa akin pero meron kaming komunikasyon hanggang ngayon,” she said. Dayan was thrust into the spotlight after President Rodrigo Duterte accused De Lima of funding the construction of his house with drug money.
The senator’s former driver also allegedly acts as her bagman in drug-related dealings, Duterte said. De Lima said she was forced to talk about Dayan because she pities him for the attention he is getting. She said her former driver has gone into hiding because of the controversy involving the two of them.
